Journeys Live is a day of free, live entertainment celebrating talented artists from around the world, who now call Manchester home. Featuring a truly global line-up of live music, spoken word, performance, dance and food from emerging or established artists and community groups. There will be crafty workshops for all the family and stalls to find out how you can help support refugees and asylum seekers. Join us for lunch and stay for the day, travelling the globe without moving from Manchester.

REVIVE WOMEN’S VOICES BANNER PROJECT (12.00pm - 5.30pm)

Revive Women’s Group will also be displaying their Women’s Voices Banner Project. You will be able to see these striking new artworks, take part in making our own communal banner and find out more from members of the group.

JALI NYONKOLING KUYATEH

(12.30pm - 1.30pm)

Born into a family of traditional oral historians or Griots, Jali is a Gambian Kora Master. Come and relax to his enchanting sounds and hear some stories behind the songs.

LETTERS TO OUR MOTHERS AND FATHERS

(2.30pm - 2.45pm)

Come and hear spoken word performances from the Letters to our Mothers and Fathers project. Led by poet Mandla Rae, this group of new writers explore the ways we interact with our families and what are the effects of culture and tradition in communicating with our elders? Presented as part of Journeys Festival International and Commonword’s Festival of Firsts.

DANCE AWAY THE SPIDERS

(4.00pm - 4.30pm)

Exploring repression, resistance, trauma and immigration from the perspectives of a group of young refugee women. Join us for this performance, which explores cultural traditions from the participants’ home nations in a lively cross-art form celebration.

THE CHANNEL (12.00pm - 5.30pm)

Throughout the day there will be an opportunity to take part in Isobel Tarr’s installation The Channel and send a message to people currently detained

in UK immigration centres. 

SANCTUARY KITCHEN

(1.30pm - 2.30pm)

Join us for a welcoming meal featuring tastes from around the world. Prepared by volunteers from Manchester City of Sanctuary working in collaboration with award-winning social enterprise 4Lunch. Find out the stories behind the dishes from the chefs. The meal is offered on a Pay-What-You-Feel basis and all money raised will go to support the amazing work of Manchester City of Sanctuary.

WOMEN’S UNITY CHOIR

(3.00pm - 3.40pm)

A unique collaboration between The University of Manchester music students, Olympias Music Foundation’s Women’s Voices Choir and Amani Community Choir. Students and diverse members of the local community share their love of music and singing with a global songbook.

MANCHESTER INTERNATIONAL ROOTS ORCHESTRA

(5.00pm - 5.30pm)

“It’s like the whole world is here in one room, and you don’t need flight tickets to see it.” A unique ensemble fusing diverse musical influences from Eastern Europe to South Asia, embracing rap, classical and jazz music along the way. Join Festival favourites MIRO for a chance to see their new show with new performers and music as well as old favourites.
