Journeys Festival International 2016 Art Council's Ambition for Excellence Awarded to Journeys Festival International ArtReach is delighted to announce that Journeys Festival International has been awarded three years funding support from Art Council England’s Ambition for Excellence fund. The fund supports artistic and cultural talent and leadership, aiming to give an international dimension to excellent work. On 2 – 3rd July ArtReach hosted theatre workshop sessions with Belarus Free Theatre, as part of Journeys Festival International. 30 theatre practitioners were invited to join us for a weekend at Phoenix, Leicester, with 10 people from each Journeys Festival International 2016 location – Leicester, Manchester and Portsmouth. As the foremost refugee-led theatre company in the UK, Belarus Free Theatre continually campaigns for artistic freedom and human rights across the globe, utilising theatre as a revolutionary art. Look Up is an outdoor visual arts exhibition that unites the public realm with art through iconic city location, that is now a major strand of activity in the Journeys Festival International programme. We are excited to announce that Look Up in Leicester has commissioned Syrian born artist Mohamad Khayata's photographic series Stitching My Syria back. The poignant series documents Syrian individuals in the dispersed locations of Damascus, Lebanon and Tunisia, uniting them with a traditional patchwork “Madeh,” created as a result of fond memories of his mother.
