Portsmouth will host a wide range of innovative and entertaining activity from exceptional refugee artists from 10th – 22nd October. Journeys Festival International will showcase work exploring the refugee experience which will include extraordinary theatre, an outdoor gallery, Coffee Shop Conversations, pop up theatre, all celebrating the artistic talent and incredible stories of refugee artists and asylum seekers. Produced by Leicester based ArtReach, the festival intends to create conversation within the community through arts and culture.
The acclaimed production Burning Doors by Belarus Free Theatre will be at New Theatre Royal for one night only on Friday 14 October featuring the theatre debut of Pussy Riot's Maria Alyokhina. The production tells the true stories of persecuted artists, living under dictatorship, who will not be silenced. (Click here to go to the Box Office)
And if you like theatre, Pamodzi Creative Productions & New Theatre Royal will present an immersive, interactive pop-up piece of dance-theatre fusion on Thursday 13 October, exploring the 10,000 refugee children who are currently missing in Europe alone.
The Festival will also feature:
- Look Up - a high impact, large scale outdoor visual arts exhibition on the exteriors of iconic buildings across Portsmouth’s cityscape.
- A series of free Coffee Shop Conversations that give an opportunity to the public to discuss and exchange views with refugee artists over the domestic ritual of coffee and cake.
- Sanctuary & Sustenance: The Story of Many Journeys to the UK, is a stunning multimedia projection of photography, film and music, that is making its UK premiere in the majestic setting of Portsmouth Cathedral
- Let's Go Fly A Kite on Saturday 15 October at Portsmouth Guildhall, will be a family friendly activity day that celebrates kite flying culture in digital and hands on workshops.
