PORTSMOUTH: The Container Project
As part of Journeys Festival International Portsmouth (10 - 22 October) a shipping container will be transformed into an innovative project space. The Container will be in situ in the Eldon Building Courtyard thanks to our friends at The Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, The University of Portsmouth. Symbolic of export and transference, the container will host a variety of projects, exhibitions and FREE events including;
THE WELL-COME PROJECT
MON 10 - SAT 15 OCTOBER
Working alongside local urban artist M-One and Portsmouth's leading contemporary gallery Aspex, ten young artists from the local refugee and asylum seeker community will explore their creative talents in a series of arts based workshops hosted in the container.
Come and watch M-One create a mural on the outside of the container 10 - 12 October.
MON 17 - FRI 22 OCTOBER
An opportunity to see more of Look Up artist Nikos Papadopoulos' Plasticobilism work up close, in a stunning visual arts exhibition.
In 2013, Nikos Papadopoulos was playing with his eldest son John-Marios. "We were pretending to go to bed using Playmobil - and it gave me the idea to recreate scenes not only about home life, but the whole of society," he says.
Since then, the 36-year-old comedy writer from Thessaloniki has become a celebrated artist in his home country of Greece and on the international stage. Nikos approaches the work like a satirist - setting up the figurines to be a thought-provoking and occasionally challenging comment on current refugee and asylum seeker issues. The dioramas are then photographed and posted to an international network of over 30,000 followers on the Plasticobilism fan page.
