Belarus Free Theatre - New Writing Project

June 30, 2017

In collaboration with Belarus Free Theatre, Journeys Festival International will be offering a creative writing project for refugee and asylum seekers in each festival city (Leicester, Manchester and Portsmouth) over the next three months.

The project consists of various workshops that aim to give the opportunity to refugees and asylum seekers who are writers, or interested in this discipline, to develop their skills, express their creativity to an audience and be taught by one of the most viceral contemporary theatre companies in the world - Belarus Free Theatre.

Each participant will produce a piece of writing that will have rehearsed readings as part of the festival, and potentially be performed by professional actors. In Manchester, the project’s participants will be guided by playwright and actor Rosie MacPherson (SBC Theatre Company). In Leicester, the project will be guided by Jenny Hibert (House of Verse) and in Portsmouth, Zella Compton.

Last week the project began with a first workshop in Manchester – an inspirational day lead by Belarus Free Theatre Artistic Directors Nicolai and Natalia, who both seek political asylum here in the UK. They shared their experiences and coordinated a series of activities in order to motivate the participants and give them some ideas about how to express their own personal stories.

“Having BFT Artistic Directors in the first workshop of our Writing Project was an absolutely stunning experience. The magic of their work took me to an emotional state where I found myself so involved in the dynamic of the session, as much as any of the participants. Everyone was so open, which, in some cases was to total strangers, and discovered really good points to take into account when writing a performative piece” Nuria, Manchester Young Producer, ArtReach.

The project will begin next in Leicester and Portsmouth. Stay tuned for more updates and find out where you can attend the rehearsed readings as part of the festivals soon.
