Journeys Festival International Wins Prestigious Award for its Support of Refugee Integration
City of Sanctuary UK (cityofsanctuary.org) awarded Journeys Festival International (Journeysfestival.com) (JFI) the UK’s first ‘Festival of Sanctuary’ Award – a prestigious title to recognise the festival’s work to support those seeking refuge in the UK.
Journeys Festival International supports refugee artists in the UK cultural industries, giving more opportunities and celebrating their stories through great art and culture. City of Sanctuary UK is a charity that is committed to building a culture of hospitality and welcome for people seeking sanctuary across the UK. Journeys Festival International works closely with the frontline charities including British Red Cross and, notable, City of Sanctuary groups in both Leicester and Manchester.
In 2017, Journeys Festival International provided Refugee and Asylum Seeker Awareness Training to its cultural partners and developed the ROOTS Refugee and Asylum Seeker Advisory group for the festivals with the help of City of Sanctuary.
Colleen Molloy, National Development Officer, City of Sanctuary UK said “We are so impressed by the development of Journeys Festival International and the ongoing commitment to local asylum seekers and engagement of partners. The creativity is a joy.”
Nicola Middler, Executive Producer of JFI said “We are honoured and delighted to be recognised as the first Festival of Sanctuary by City of Sanctuary. We have an ongoing commitment to working with refugee and asylum seeker artists to provide a positive interface between exceptional diverse artists and different communities. Our dedication to sharing our learning and experience with our breadth of Festival partners in Leicester, Manchester and Portsmouth is something we are also passionate about, we hope to support many of them to attain Sanctuary in Arts status too!”
