Call Out: Storytellers & Musicians

April 6, 2018

New Routes is a collaboration between theatre makers Sameena Khan and Parmjit Sagoo. The duo are going to present the collaboration as part of Journeys Festival International in Leicester and are on the hunt for two performers to help develop the piece.

New Routes is seeking to develop stories with different refugee communities through a multi-sensory story-making process. These stories will be adapted for performance, aimed at family audiences. New Routes will be a mobile theatre show using a cargo bike, a storyteller, a kamishibai (Japanese mobile story telling theatre) and a musician.

The results of our Research and Development phase will be shared through four separate sharing events within Leicester in May, June and August 2018.

We are looking for two performers to help us develop New Routes; a musician and a storyteller.

Both performers must have:

  • Experience of working with family audiences

  • An interest in using puppetry and multi-sensory storytelling techniques

  • Based in East Midlands

  • Strong team players

  • Strong improvisers that can respond to the unpredictability of festival settings

  • Be available between May and August 2018.

Storyteller - Male or Female. Our storyteller is a mysterious, nomadic character who travels the world collecting stories from the people he/she meets. The bike is the storyteller’s home, all possessions and storytelling artefacts are stored within the bike. The storyteller cares deeply about the stories collected. Many of these stories would remain hidden or untold if he/she didn’t tell them.

Musician - Male/Female. The musician must be able to play an instrument that is mobile (e.g accordion, guitar, clarinet, flute etc). The musician accompanies the stories that are told, enriching the mood and atmosphere of each tale.
