Look Up: For exciting art work across Portsmouth this October (19 - 28 Oct)
Journeys Festival International Portsmouth, produced by ArtReach, is back for 2018 from 19-28 October and this year is expected to be bigger and better than ever before.
The ArtReach team is excited to bring a new version of its high impact, outdoor exhibition ‘Look Up: Searching for Home’’ to the city as part of the Journeys Festival International programme.
‘Look Up: Searching for Home’ is an outdoor exhibition, installed on the exterior of prominent buildings and digital screens around the city, which provides a unique opportunity for artists engaging with refugee and asylum seeker themes to have their work shown as part of one of the most visible strands of Journeys Festival International Portsmouth.
Last year, Portsmouth was pleased to receive the work of Natalia Michalska and Majid Dhana, two locally based artists. They created a series of creative portraits of local refugee and asylum seekers, which were installed across the city for the duration of the Festival.
In 2018 the Festival is thrilled to announce Svetlana Ochkovskaya, originally from Belarus and now settled in Havant, as this year’s Look Up artist. Svetlana, who has studied at Southampton and Goldsmiths Universities was thrilled to be selected.
Svetlana said, ‘This is a great opportunity to display my work in an amazing city. I hope to get live footage from around the city as a basis to work with. I’m also planning to engage the local community alongside the asylum seeker and refugee communities in Portsmouth to inspire and feed into the work.’
For Look Up 2018 Svetlana will create a short film, combining that live footage with performance sequences that will be displayed digitally around the city and will also create a series of still images using the latest in green screen technology.
Traditionally Svetlana’s work explores the theme of migration from a sci-fi and fantasy perspective, seeking to explore and to break down the boundary between real and imaginary.
Claire Woollard, Producer of Journeys Festival International Portsmouth explains, ‘It’s exciting to offer a cutting edge artist like Svetlana the opportunity to display her work in the local area. Without a doubt this exhibition will really capture people’s attention and imagination across the city. It will certainly give people something interesting and stimulating to ponder throughout our 10 day Festival.’
