Displaced Words - Literature Commission - Open Call – Greater Manchester

ArtReach, producers of Journeys Festival International, have teamed up with Commonword to create a new commissioning opportunity for an artist/writer from a refugee background or refugee led artists group currently based in Greater Manchester. We seek proposals for an innovative approach or project for a new work of literature in the broadest sense. The work may take the form of poetry, prose, a play, novel or another written or oral medium and can be written and performed in any language. The new work will be presented in public in Manchester as part of Journeys Festival International and Commonword’s Festival of Firsts between 4th and 13th October 2019.

The successful artist/writer, group or project will receive:

  • £2000 commission which must include all related costs with the project

  • Space at Commonword to develop the work if required

  • Mentoring support from the ArtReach and Commonword teams

  • The opportunity to publicly showcase the work on as part of a high-profile event in Manchester.

  • Marketing support from our teams with promoting the events or performances

  • Digital hosting of the work and documentation of the events/performances on our websites.

To apply please send a written proposal that covers the following:

  • An outline of your approach to creating this new work.

  • What it is that provides the inspiration for this work.

  • The subject matter you will work with to develop it (this is left completely open to you).

  • What format the public presentation will take, such as performance, play, reading, discussion.

Please also include your personal biography or that of the group you are working with and also tell us about your track record and where possible providing links to past works to help us better understand your work.

Proposals will be assessed by members of the ArtReach and Commonword curatorial teams and will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Innovation and originality of the idea, development process and source material

  • Innovation and originality of the ideas for public presentation

  • Track record and previous work

These must be received by 12:00 noon on Monday 13th May. All applications will be acknowledged and applicants will be told of the decision no later than Monday 20th May.
